The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has garnered attention from the international community, with various countries and organizations expressing their concerns and offering mediation efforts. The so-called Minsk Group made up of Russia, France, and the United States, has been in negotiations to find a peaceful solution for many years. However, achieving a lasting resolution has proven challenging due to the complex nature of the conflict, the differing interests of the key players, and intransigence in their positions.
As the Soviet Union collapsed creating a power vacuum and allowing long-standing grievances to resurface, a full-scale war broke out in 1988 which lasted until 1994. The war resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, and it is estimated more than a million people were forced from their homes on both sides of the conflict. The war ended with a ceasefire agreement, but the underlying issues remained unresolved, setting the stage for future hostilities.
Those hostilities resurfaced in September 2020 with a significant escalation and another full-scale war erupted between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Although it lasted for just six weeks, the result was heavy casualties and the displacement of thousands more people. Both sides accused each other of initiating the conflict, and whilst the international community expressed concern over the escalation of violence no acceptable solution was found.
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has had a severe humanitarian impact. The fighting has resulted in the loss of many thousands of civilian lives, destruction of infrastructure, and displacement of thousands of people. Humanitarian organizations have been working to provide aid and support to those affected by the conflict. Still, the long-term consequences on the region’s population and social fabric have been a significant concern.
As said the latest hostilities started on September 19th in response to the deaths of four Azerbaijan soldiers and two civilians who died in land mine explosions. backed by its ally Turkey, Azerbaijan’s initiated its “anti-terror strike”. Lasting just 24 hours and following a Russian-negotiated ceasefire the Armenian forces agreed to disband their armed forces. Azerbaijan announced it had seized full control of the region. Following this, President Samvel Shahramanyan has issued a decree stating that Nagorno-Karabakh will cease to exist as of January 1, 2024.
The Azerbaijani strike has caused a mass evacuation of the ethnic Armenian population. It is estimated some 100,000 Armenians are being uprooted and escaping the territory. According to the high commissioner for refugees at the United Nations this represents some 80 percent of the Armenian population in the region. Reuters has reported that Armenian leaders have estimated that due to the fear of ethnic cleansing, the entire Armenian population will leave the region.
In conclusion, It is impossible to say what the future holds for the Nagorno-Karabakh region. With its overwhelming military advantage and the mass exodus of the Armenian population, it would seem Azerbaijan has full control of the region and they have won a victory. However, the future of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains uncertain. While a ceasefire agreement was reached, the underlying issues and grievances have not been addressed given both side’s past reluctance to compromise in negotiations. Questions remain, will the Azerbaijan leaders allow any Armenians left to live in peace? Will the Armenians continue the fight? (perhaps using guerrilla tactics). Achieving a lasting and sustainable resolution will require the commitment of all parties involved, and it is difficult to see how that can be reached at this time.`);

What does the future hold for the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict?

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been one of the longest-running disputes in the Caucasus region. On September 19th Azerbaijan launched what it described as an “anti-terror strike” on the Armenian-majority region. Within 24 hours the Armenian-backed de facto government agreed to disarm and dissolve its military. This article aims to provide an understanding of the conflict, its historical background, and what may happen next.
The roots of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict can be traced back to the early 20th century when Armenia and Azerbaijan emerged as independent nations following the collapse of the Russian Empire. The region of Nagorno-Karabakh, populated mostly by ethnic Armenians, found itself under the control of an Azerbaijani government. This led to tensions between the two communities, as the Armenians sought greater autonomy and eventually independence.
A combination of historical, ethnic, and territorial factors has fueled the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict ever since. The desire for self-determination among the ethnic Armenian population clashed with Azerbaijan’s claim over the region. Armenia supports the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, which has governed the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan, on the other hand, seeks
