European equity close: Gains, but not the strong gains from earlier

<p>Closing changes:</p><ul><li>Stoxx 600 +0.4%</li><li>German DAX +0.5%</li><li>UK FTSE 100 +0.8%</li><li>French CAC +0.8%</li><li>Italy MIB +1.3%</li><li>Spain IBEX +0.5%</li></ul><p>There was a strong opening gap higher in the DAX but it faded in US trade and we ended up closing in the gap.</p><p>Italian stocks rebounded slowly after the government scaled back a plan to put windfall taxes on banks.</p>
