Better to have a longer term view

I have helped many traders over the years and I know what they want, but what they want is not always the best option. What most traders want is to trade intraday or short term with a tight stop loss. However, statistics show that focussing on intraday moves or short term moves lasting a few days is not as reliable as focussing on longer term moves lasting weeks or months.

There is too much noise, too many manipulations by the banks, the politicians …in the very short term. On a day the market can produce a weird move, take all the stops but nothing has changed. Over the next week or two the market will behave as expected. Those who sit tight will be rewarded. Those who trade with a tight stop loss will lose.

I have seen this happen so many times in the last 20 years, this is why many traders lose and the tighter the stop loss the greater the risk of losing. I know from experience that my forecast over weeks or months is more reliable than my short term or intraday forecast. If I take a trade and sit tight and ignore the daily noise, the trade has a good chance of turning into a profit.

As a result I don't trade intraday and I don't use a stop loss, I keep trades open for weeks or months. You may think it is not exciting to trade once a week or once a fortnight but it works, that is the bottom line. Unfortunately most traders like fast trading, trading daily, sometimes several times a day. They think the more they trade the more money they will make. The truth is they will make their broker rich and over the long term they will lose. Why don't they trade once a week but focus on the best trades? There are many trades but only few good quality trades.

As a mentor I believe I should only promote the best strategy. In the past I offered a service based on what traders wanted. Now I offer what I think is the best strategy. As a result I no longer offer trading services for day traders and traders who use a stop loss. I only offer analysis for medium/long term trades, and I publish my trades. What is important is getting the direction right over the next few weeks/months and keeping the trades small. Nothing else matters.

I trade futures and stocks (UK and US).
