Trump Campaign Rally Linked to Tulsa COVID-19 Spike

Trump has been at the centre of further controversy this week over claims that his recent campaign rally in Tulsa “likely contributed” to a fresh outbreak of COVID-19 there. The Tulsa City-County Health Department said that the event, held on June 20th, “more than likely” translated into the spike in cases seen over recent weeks.

The Tulsa City-County Health Department recorded 261 fresh cases at the start of this week, marking a new record high for daily cases, with a further 206 cases on Tuesday. This was far above the 76 and 96 cases seen respectively on the Monday and Tuesday prior to Trump’s campaign event.

Tulsa COVID Spike

Over 6200 people attended trump’s campaign rally and pictures of the event showed a large percentage of attendees without masks, including Trump. Members of Trump’s team have even been confirmed positive in the wake of the event with six campaign staff and two secret service staff testing positive for the virus along with one reporter who covered the event. Trump’s next campaign rally is scheduled for New Hampshire on Saturday ad there are fears of a similar spike in infections.

Dr Fauci Warns of Further Deaths

Trump has been keen to downplay news of a fresh rise in infection numbers in the US over recent weeks attributing the new upward trend to the increase in testing, pointing out that the death toll is not increasing. However Dr Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading health expert on the virus has warned that the US’s handling of the virus is dangerous and said that many more people will die as the death toll will inevitably begin to rise again with the country still “knee deep in the first wave of infections”.

US Officially Withdraws From WHO

Fauci’s warning comes as the US officially begins its withdrawal process from the World Health Organisation. Trump announced that the US would withdraw funding over his accusation that China and the WHO colluded to cover up the outbreak as it first happened. The UN has said that Trump’s “move to formally withdraw from WHO amid the greatest public health crisis that Americans and the world have faced in a century is short-sighted, unnecessary, and unequivocally dangerous”. These comments were echoed by Stephen Hoyer who released a statement saying: “To withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) at the height of a global pandemic that has already killed more than 133,000 Americans is self-defeating and dangerous”.

In an interview on Wednesday, however, Trump was keen to dismiss Fauci’s warning, saying: I think we are in a good place. I disagree with him. He’s said numerous things – don’t close off China, don’t ban China, and I did it anyway. I didn’t listen to my experts and I banned China. We would have been in much worse state,’ Trump continued.

‘You wouldn’t believe. The number of deaths more we would have if we didn’t do the ban, and then we banned Europe also when Italy and the various countries were in such trouble

So we’ve done a good job. I think we are going to be in two, three, four weeks, by the time we next speak, I think we are going to be in very good shape.”
